The majority of the American population relies on a personal vehicle to maintain their livelihood. Commuting to work, the grocery store, and attending social events often requires a car. It’s important to keep your vehicle in good condition so you can continue to go about your daily life. Our team at Express Auto is here to be a resource for all of your automobile needs.

Routine Tasks

A lot of maintenance tasks need to be performed multiple times a year for your car to perform its best. Creating a maintenance schedule and checklist can be a great way to keep your vehicle going.

Oil Changes

When you think of vehicle maintenance, you probably think of oil changes right away. Combustible engines require oil to operate, but engine oil will naturally decrease and become dirty over time. You can use the dipstick to check the oil levels, but the general rule of thumb is to replace the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. If you commute regularly or go on a long road trip, you will probably need to complete your changes based on mileage rather than time. When the oil is changed, the oil filter should be as well. It is very important to check your owner’s manual to determine what oil type should be used in your vehicle. Some engines require synthetic oil, for example. You can also check with your mechanic if you’ve misplaced the manual.

Washer Fluid and Wipers

Another task you can routinely perform is adding windshield washer fluid. This is a year-round safety concern! Washer fluid helps prevent buildup on your windshield, improving your visibility. Your wipers should also be routinely monitored in order to maintain safe visibility during rain and other weather conditions.

Tires

The tires on your vehicle are essential for travel and safety. You should regularly check that the air pressure meets the manufacturer recommendations. Many newer models will alert you if your tire pressure is low, but it’s also useful to keep a pressure gauge in your toolkit.

Whenever you check your air pressure, you can also take a look at the tread. It will wear down over time, but excessive wear can cause dangerous situations. You also want your tires to wear evenly, so you should schedule a tire rotation every few months. If you ever notice one tire is wearing more quickly than the others, you may need to have your alignment checked. These services should be performed by a professional.

Cabin Air Filter

Something that many car owners forget to maintain is their cabin air filter. This can be a health hazard because the filter regulates the air being distributed within the cab of your vehicle. You should replace or clean the filter at least once a year.

Specialized Care

Sometimes you will need to have specialized tasks completed for the condition of your vehicle. Having regular mechanical checks can be essential to keep your vehicle running smoothly.
